President Taft's Grave

A Visit to President Taft’s Grave at Arlington National Cemetery

Visiting Arlington National Cemetery near Washington, D.C., is always a humbling experience. The sweeping fields of white headstones, the quiet reverence, and the weight of history make it one of the most significant and moving sites in the United States.

While many come to pay their respects at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier or see President Kennedy’s grave, there are many lesser-known but equally important memorials to visit. One of those is the final resting place of President William Howard Taft.

Taft: A President and a Chief Justice

William Howard Taft holds a unique place in American history. He was not only the 27th President of the United States but also the 10th Chief Justice of the Supreme Court—the only person to have held both offices. Despite his substantial contributions, Taft’s legacy is often overshadowed by other more famous contemporaries such as Theodore Roosevelt, president before Taft, and Woodrow Wilson, President after.

Finding the Grave

Taft was the first U.S. president to be buried in Arlington National Cemetery.  His gravesite is in Section 30 of the cemetery, not far from the more famous Kennedy gravesite. His headstone is larger than the standard military markers but maintains a simple dignity. A tall, grey granite marker bears his name, along with his wife, Helen Herron Taft, who was a trailblazing First Lady in her own right. Unlike the elaborate eternal flame at JFK’s grave, Taft’s memorial is understated, in keeping with his reserved and thoughtful nature.

If you find yourself in Washington, D.C., Arlington National Cemetery is almost certainly on your itinerary.  While the more well-known gravesites draw crowds, take some time to visit President Taft’s grave. It’s a quieter, more reflective spot, perfect for those who appreciate history and want to honor a leader who dedicated his life to public service.

If you are ever in Cincinnati, Ohio, visit the William Howard Taft National Historic Site, which preserves the home where Taft was born and grew up.
