Andrew Jackson State Park: History and Park Guide

Andrew Jackson State Park is in the rolling countryside of Lancaster County, South Carolina. It is dedicated to the seventh President of the United States, Andrew Jackson, and provides a unique blend of history, outdoor fun, and scenery.

Andrew Jackson State Park: A Walk Through History

Andrew Jackson State Park is a tribute to the nation’s first president from South Carolina. Born on March 15, 1767, Jackson spent his early years in the then-known Waxhaws of the South Carolina backcountry. The park preserves the landscape that shaped his childhood and the rise of the “common man” to the White House.

The deeply held convictions stemming from early experiences guided Jackson throughout life and during his presidency.

Visiting Andrew Jackson Birthplace Monument

Jackson was not born on the property. The Andrew Jackson Birthplace Monument, which commemorates the albeit debated site of his birth, is nearby, about 3 miles away.

We pulled into a nearly empty parking lot in the middle of winter. There were a few visitors here and there, but for the most part, my wife and I had the park to ourselves.

The museum was a highlight for most visitors, including us. It features exhibits about Jackson’s youth, his rise to the presidency, and his legacy. It also contains Revolutionary War artifacts and artifacts related to President Jackson.

A Lock of Andrew Jackson’s Hair on Display at the Museum

One of the things I found most interesting was the display that contained a lock of Andrew Jackson’s Hair.  The lock of hair was given to friends when he returned to New Orleans in 1840 for the 25th anniversary celebration of his victory in the Battle of New Orleans. It was a common practice at the time for friends to exchange such gifts. The strands on display were originally part of a brooch and were donated to the park.

Another striking feature of the park is the “Andrew Jackson, Boy of the Waxhaws” statue. The bronze sculpture by artist Anna Hyatt Huntington is truly remarkable. It depicts a young Jackson on horseback.

An 18th-century replica schoolhouse at the park offers a glimpse of colonial-era education, giving visitors a sense of what life was like for young Andrew Jackson and his peers.

Outdoor Adventures and Recreation

Beyond its historical significance, Andrew Jackson State Park offers some great opportunities for outdoor recreation. An 18-acre lake, perfect for fishing, canoeing, or kayaking. Anglers can cast a line for bass, bream, and catfish.

Hiking Trails

The Garden of the Waxhaws Trail is a scenic 1-mile loop that winds through the woods and around the lake. Keep an eye peeled for wildlife, particularly birding opportunities

The Crawford Trail is a 1.1-mile loop that weaves through a mixed oak, cedar, and pine forest in the undeveloped portion of the park. This is great for folks looking for a quiet experience walking through the woods that Jackson roamed as a young boy.

Camping in the Park

For those who want to extend their visit, the park has a campground, including tent and RV sites with modern amenities.
