Captain Abraham Lincoln’s Grave: The Pioneer Grandfather of a President

Before Abraham Lincoln became one of America’s most revered presidents, his family roots ran deep in the Kentucky frontier. About 30 minutes east of  Louisville lies the final resting place of his paternal grandfather, Captain Abraham Lincoln, a man whose frontier courage helped shape the family legacy long before the Lincoln name was etched into history books.

A Frontier Life and Tragic Death

Captain Abraham Lincoln was born in Pennsylvania in 1744 and served in the militia during the Revolutionary War. Yes, the picture above says he was born in May of 1738. That is incorrect.  In the early 1780s, he moved his family to the Kentucky frontier along the Daniel Boone Wilderness Road, settling near present-day Louisville.

Life on the frontier was perilous, and in 1786, tragedy struck: while working his fields, Lincoln was ambushed and killed by Native Americans near the Rolling Fork River. His death left his young son, Thomas Lincoln—future president Abraham Lincoln’s father—without a father at just six years old.

Visiting Abraham Lincoln’s Grandfather’s Grave

We visited Captain Lincoln’s grave on an early late winter afternoon. The simple stone marker honors Captain Lincoln’s sacrifice and reminds visitors of the hardships endured by early settlers. The site, surrounded by rolling farmland, feels untouched by time—quiet, reflective, and rooted in the same soil that nurtured the Lincoln family’s American story.

Why It Matters

Visiting Captain Abraham Lincoln’s grave isn’t just about seeing a historical marker—it’s about connecting the dots between generations. The same frontier values of perseverance, independence, and resilience that defined the elder Lincoln would one day influence his grandson, guiding him through America’s most divided era.
