Sweet Tradition: Berger Cookies in Baltimore

No trip to Baltimore feels complete without biting into a Berger’s Cookie. These thick, cake-like shortbread cookies topped with a generous slab of hand-dipped rich chocolate fudge have been a Charm City favorite for well over a century.

The history of the tasty cookies dates back to 1835, when Henry Berger immigrated from Germany and opened a bakery in East Baltimore. Berger and his sons sold the cookies at all of Baltimore’s public markets.  For more than 190 years, that tradition continues. We bought a box and quickly devoured them at the Lexington Market.

The Smithsonian Magazine said Berger Cookies are “Baltimore’s Gift to the Chocolate World,” and we could not agree more.  Biting into one is like tasting a piece of local history—decadent, nostalgic, and unapologetically sweet.

Berger’s Cookies are a Baltimore tradition worth savoring.
