Camp Washington Chili: A Cincinnati Tradition
Looking for a bite of Cincinnati history with a side of weirdly delicious? Look no further than Camp Washington Chili—a beloved institution in the Queen City since 1940.
Located at 3005 Colerain Avenue in Cincinnati’s Camp Washington neighborhood, this chili parlor is more than just a place to eat—it’s a local landmark. After relocating due to a street-widening project in 2000, Camp Washington Chili rebuilt with a nostalgic nod to 1950s diners—think neon, chrome, and that classic counter seating.
Trying Camp Washington Chili
My wife and I visited on a busy weekday lunch. I was very excited to have some Cincinnati chili while we were visiting the city. My wife was less enthusiastic, but at least relieved it was not Skyline or Gold Star. Neither of which she is particularly fond of, despite my repeated attempts to sway her.
Pulling into the parking lot of Camp Washington, it was packed and difficult to find a spot. We had to circle three or four times before getting a place.
Walking inside, I knew we were in for a Cincinnati treat. Every booth was taken. The walls are a mosaic of press clippings and accolades—a fitting tribute to its culinary legacy and commitment to Cincinnati’s chili culture.
We elected to sit at the first-come, first-served counter. Our server, who turned out to be the owner, promptly greeted us and got us our drinks.

A Taste That’s Worth the Trip
The wife had a burger and fries, yes, you can get more than chili. Not me, though; it was a 5-way or the highway for this guy.
Let’s talk vernacular… Here’s how to order like a local.
The terms “three-way” (spaghetti, chili, cheese), “four-way” (add onions or beans), and “five-way” (add both onions and beans) are not just menu options—they’re a regional culinary rite of passage.
Camp Washington’s chili is widely the go-to choice when you crave the best. Their version of Cincinnati-style chili stands out for its beefy, coarsely ground texture, whole hearty beans, freshly grated mounds of cheese, and rich warm notes of cinnamon and herbs.
The kitchen absolutely cranks out food here. At any given moment, there were a dozen plates of piping hot snacks piled high with cheese making their way out of the window.
Our food came out in no time. And let me tell you, my 5 Way was a treat that’s hard to beat. My Cincy chili skeptic wife even admitted it was terrific! After cleaning our plates and paying, we left, content and excited to visit again when we are in the Queen City.
Awards, Accolades, and a Dash of Controversy
Camp Washington Chili carries an impressive roster of honors. In 2000, it was honored with a prestigious James Beard “America’s Classics” Award. It was also named one of “The 20 Most Iconic Food Destinations in America” by Smithsonian Magazine.
