Wild Wonders Await: Discover the Fresno Chaffee Zoo

The Fresno Chaffee Zoo is the pride and joy of Fresno. While there are a few other things that make Fresno unique, the zoo is my personal favorite. And for a good reason, it may not be as large as the San Diego, Cincinnati, or National Zoo. But what it lacks in size, it makes up for with incredible exhibits.

The zoo offers an immersive wildlife experience that delights visitors of all ages. Spanning nearly 40 acres, it is home to more than 200 species and provides both educational and entertaining encounters with animals from around the globe.

The zoo’s exhibits are beautifully designed to replicate natural environments, ensuring the well-being of the animals and offering guests an authentic experience.

We lived in the Fresno area for a while and were fortunate to visit often. First and foremost, get there early, even before they open. The zoo is very popular, and parking can be a bear. No pun intended.

Visiting the Fresno Chaffee Zoo

When you first walk in, to your left is the Wolf Wood Exhibit. Here lives a pair of red wolves, which are native to the eastern United States, but very few remain in the wild.

Next is the reptile house, where you can see all sorts of lizards, salamanders, turtles, frogs, and, of course, snakes up close!

Next is Sea Lion Cove, which is modeled after California’s coastal landscapes and features plenty of California sea lions and some spotty harbor seals. Sea Lion Cove won top honors from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. You can watch the animals from four different viewpoints, including the 35-foot underwater viewing window. We always spend quite a while here watching them swim laps and do acrobatic jumps, much to our delight and those around us.

Kingdoms of Asia Exhibit

The Kingdoms of Asia Exhibit is next. Along the way, you pass some lemurs and a few different kinds of monkeys. Before you go in, take a second stop by the Flamingos. This is one of my husband’s and my favorite exhibits. You stand remarkably close to them!. They are simply beautiful.

Kingdoms of Asia is in the heart of the zoo and is a big highlight for visitors. The Malayan Tiger is one the best! Every time we walk by, I swear it sees us as a bit curious but mostly has a potential snack.

A large portion of the zoo is dedicated to animals from Africa. You will find White Rhinos, Elephants, and so much more there. If you like to get up close and personal with a Giraffe, this is your place.

Feed a Giraffe

In my entire life, I’d never known the strong desire I had to feed a giraffe until I visited Fresno Chaffee Zoo. For a small fee, you can feed a very long-necked, spotty friend romaine lettuce! It was always a huge highlight of our experience there. The staff does ask that you not pet the new friend you make. Fair. When we were there, it was mostly dads with very small children feeding the giraffes, but I’m a kid at heart, too.

Touch a Stingray

My inner child is also always delighted by the Stingray Station.  You can pet and feed them in a shallow outdoor pool for another small fee. We were given frozen fish heads in a little cup when we visited. The zoo keeper taught us how to tuck our thumbs and poke the fish out of our fists so the stingray could come by and suction it. A very unique experience. They almost feel like tough old leather when you run your hand over one. Again, mostly kids participing, but I couldn’t help myself.

If you are ever in Fresno and looking for away to spend an afternoon, the Fresno Chaffee Zoo is the place to be. Also, it should be noted that as far as Zoo’s go this one is very affordably priced.
