Enjoy Tasty Snacks at Oregon Tillamook Creamery
On a recent trip down the Oregon Coast, we made time for my favorite Creamery. Tillamook! Their cheese and ice cream have been a staple in our home for a long time. And when I found out we’d be driving right by it on the way to our campsite, we just had to make a stop. It’s been farm family-owned and operated as a co-op since its inception in 1909.
The creamery is about an hour and a half west of Portland, Oregon. When we finally made it to the Creamery, it was our last stop of the day, and a good thing, too, because there was about an hour until closing.
Pulling into the massive parking lot, you get an immediate sense of how enormous the operation is. Tillamook designed this place for visitors. From the moment we walked in, the place was buzzing with activity.
We headed straight up the stairs to the observation deck, where giant windows showcased a small-scale production facility below and informational signs detailing the cheese-making process from beginning to end.
It’s quite the experience. It is set up as a display, and with the amount of goods in the gift shop, you know they are making most of the goods in the giant production facility behind the VC.
After we walked around the observation deck, we headed straight to the scoop shop to sample some tasty treats. The ice cream is extra creamy! The Mountain Huckleberry is my favorite flavor, but there are 27 other flavors available if Huckleberry is not for you.
Next, we had to go through the incredible cheese selection of the gift shop. Many cheeses I have never seen in grocery stores, either at home or on our travels, we opted to try the English-style sweet White Cheddar from the Farmers’ Collection.
And silly me, I could not resist the strawberry ice cream-flavored lip balm or the giant block of cheese magnet for our home fridge.
We spent about an hour here, but you could spend a few hours more. They offer several more in-depth paid tours if that interests you as well.
This is a must-stop for families and other travelers alike—a very Pacific Northwest Experience.
