West Virginia-Style Hot Dogs: The Classic Mountain State Food You Have to Try

If you’re exploring West Virginia, there’s one local favorite you simply can’t skip—the West Virginia-style hot

It’s simple, messy, and surprisingly perfect. To quote “Super Weenie,” our favorite place to order them in Charleston, you are going to need some napkins.

A classic WV dog starts with a steamed bun and an all-beef hot dog, then gets piled high with yellow mustard, chopped onions, beanless chili or simply  “sauce,” depending on where you order, and creamy coleslaw. Sometimes referred to as “slaw dogs” in other parts of Appalachia, West “By God” Virginia, it’s just a hot dog.

The combination might sound unusual if you’ve never had it before, but the balance of flavors—sweet, tangy, savory, and smoky—just works.

You’ll find them everywhere across the Mountain State, from roadside stands to small-town diners and old-school drive-ins. And once you try one, you’ll understand why locals swear by them.

Just be warned: they’re messy. But that’s part of the charm.
